Tea Storage

What is the best way to store my tea?

The short answer is that tea does not like:

DGT Tea-Fresh Tin

  • Heat
  • Moisture
  • Light

There are some exceptions to these rules which we address in unique & special areas such as aging teas, but for most teas paying attention to avoiding the three conditions above will lead to successful tea storage.

This all equates to using containers that don’t emit light, and keeping the containers in a cool dry place.

A good closure is needed, but it is more important to store the containers in a cool dry place then it is to have a container that is completely sealed.

Extending the life of green tea, yellow tea, white tea, and lightly oxidized oolongs such as jade oolongs is desirable if you have significant amounts of tea by storing in sealed containers, in refrigeration.

In most situations, simply keeping the tea in a non-light transmitting container that does not transfer any type of  oder with a reasonably tight closure lid, in a cool dark location, you can easily expect a 1-2 year shelf life.
